The Department of History at Oklahoma State University offers degree programs across multiple research areas for both Master's and Doctoral candidates. Our graduate studies emphasize Native American history, public history, religious history, racial and ethnic studies, gender studies, and the societal impacts of war.
Plan I
Candidates are required to finish at least 30 credit hours of graduate coursework across two specialized areas:
United States
Europe
World (encompassing Africa, Ancient Civilizations, Asia, Latin America, and/or the Middle East)
Mandatory coursework includes:
12 credits in the primary concentration
9 credits in a secondary field
One research seminar
Historical Methodology
6 thesis credits
With committee approval, students may enroll in one external seminar from a related field. A maximum of 6 graduate credits can be taken in related disciplines or through History 6100/6130 courses. The Graduate Studies Committee may grant exceptions in special cases upon appeal to the Graduate Studies Director. European or World History majors must prove proficiency in a foreign language.
Plan II: Public History
This track requires completion of 36 graduate credit hours across two academic fields.
Essential coursework comprises:
Minimum 9 seminar credits (reading/research)
Historical Methodology
Public History Fundamentals
Practical Internship
6 thesis credits
Studies in Museum Operations and/or Historic Conservation
