Our program equips students for diverse career paths such as education, public sector roles, cultural institution leadership, and heritage conservation, along with advanced studies in history, legal fields, information science, and commerce. The department welcomes applicants from all age groups seeking to further their academic journey.
History students will:
Recognize key figures, events, and developments relevant to their studies, compare patterns across time periods, regions, and topics, interpret historical perspectives and their influence on human actions, assess the spectrum of social, cultural, political, and economic options available in specific historical settings, investigate the causes of societal transformation.
The master's degree in history comprises 36 credit hours (12 courses). Prospective students need some historical background, though an undergraduate history degree isn't mandatory. The department invites applications from learners of all ages pursuing educational advancement. Graduate history students cultivate analytical reasoning, composition skills, and self-directed research capabilities. Our curriculum readies graduates for multiple professional avenues including academia, public administration, cultural resource management, and architectural conservation, plus postgraduate opportunities in historical research, jurisprudence, archival science, and corporate sectors.
Public History involves applying historical methodologies to community engagement. The Public History and Preservation Program serves as either a primary or secondary focus within the master's degree. Participants may specialize in museum operations or built heritage conservation.
Public History concentrators must complete either a thesis or practical project. These students may select any departmental subfield as their minor. Those focusing on American, European, or World history can also minor in Public History. Additionally, through collaboration with the College of Architecture and Planning, we offer an 18-credit graduate certification in heritage conservation.
