The Developmental Psychology specialization originates from the significant developmental research focus among faculty in the Psychology Department and related fields. The program includes six primary faculty members, all graduates of prestigious national and international developmental psychology programs, along with several affiliated professors. Our primary objective is to provide comprehensive research training in lifespan developmental psychology, equipping students for careers in academia and research. From their first semester, graduate students collaborate on research projects with their primary advisor while completing supplementary coursework. The curriculum emphasizes research methodology, statistical analysis, and studies in both social and cognitive development across the lifespan. Faculty research within this specialization explores diverse areas including nutrition's impact on brain development, stress response and immune system function, early childhood STEM interest development, retirement preparation, language acquisition, and memory changes with aging.
Our program has successfully graduated numerous PhD recipients who have pursued academic positions at institutions nationwide (including Kansas State University and University of Central Arkansas), secured postdoctoral fellowships (such as at University of Maryland), or entered research roles in government agencies and private sector organizations.
