Recreational therapy involves structured activity-based treatments for individuals of all ages, from children to seniors. Certified recreational therapists design and oversee therapeutic programs for people with physical, mental, or developmental conditions, helping them improve or maintain their health, independence, and quality of life through tailored activities.
OSU stands as Oklahoma's exclusive provider of this specialized degree. Our curriculum holds accreditation from the Committee on Accreditation of Recreational Therapy Education (CARTE) under the Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), drawing exceptional students nationwide. Alumni are thoroughly equipped for further education in fields like physical therapy, occupational therapy, counseling, chiropractic medicine, or other graduate studies. They also qualify to take the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification exam to earn CTRS credentials and apply for Oklahoma medical licensure.
Hands-On Training
Students fulfill two intensive internships accumulating 1,000 supervised hours with nationally certified and state-licensed recreational therapists. Throughout their upper-level studies, participants collaborate directly with onsite professionals to perform evaluations, create customized treatment strategies, implement therapeutic interventions, and present findings during clinical team discussions.
