The Design Research and Development program welcomes individuals from diverse design-related academic disciplines. While professional experience is beneficial, it's not mandatory. Our curriculum fosters critical examination of design challenges and methodologies, promoting comparative analysis and innovative discoveries through interdisciplinary design thinking. This multidisciplinary, process-focused approach also appeals to those integrating design principles into other fields, creating a rich learning environment. To optimize opportunities for student involvement in funded initiatives and active research projects, we recommend aligning research topics with our faculty's specialized knowledge. Potential research areas typically encompass: Design-focused research, Research examining design methodologies, and Design methodologies as investigative tools. The 60-credit MFA in Design curriculum combines required seminars, studio courses, independent thesis work, and elective options across three thematic areas: studio/lab practice, historical/theoretical studies, and collaborative interdisciplinary work. Each student collaborates with a three-member thesis committee to refine their research focus and determine the most effective development approach.
