The college's Division of Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology offers two specialized tracks for pursuing a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences: Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology. Students focusing on Pharmaceutics will engage in cutting-edge research related to drug delivery and pharmacokinetics. The curriculum features advanced coursework in pharmaceutical sciences, biological sciences, chemistry, and statistical methods, with optional electives tailored to individual research interests. Following roughly two years of academic and investigative work, candidates undertake comprehensive written and oral qualifying exams. Upon passing, they dedicate the remaining program duration to original thesis research, culminating in a written dissertation and oral defense. Program specifics are outlined in the Graduate Handbook, with adaptable pathways enabling diverse career trajectories, as evidenced by our distinguished graduates. Alternatively, the Pharmacology concentration delves into drug mechanisms, utilizing pharmaceuticals as investigative tools to understand biological systems and identify novel therapeutic targets. This track incorporates graduate studies in pharmacology, physiology, biochemistry, and statistical analysis, supplemented by relevant elective options. Hands-on laboratory training forms the core of this specialization, leading to dissertation development. Similar to the Pharmaceutics track, students complete qualifying examinations after initial coursework and research phases before advancing to thesis work and final defense.
