The doctoral program in oral biology brings together an interdisciplinary team of twenty-nine faculty members from three health sciences colleges (dentistry, medicine, and veterinary medicine) and the Comprehensive Cancer Center. This program primarily emphasizes hands-on laboratory training in research methodologies. Participants learn to formulate hypotheses, create coherent research plans, gather and interpret scientific data, and communicate research outcomes. The curriculum equips students with knowledge of both contemporary and foundational scientific concepts relevant to dental and craniofacial studies. Additionally, the program trains students in selecting and investigating important scientific questions through modern research techniques. Faculty research areas encompass cellular signaling, genetic expression, inflammatory/immune cell dynamics, wound healing processes, viral and bacterial immunity, neuroendocrine influences on immune responses, and cancer immunobiology. Program researchers actively collaborate with other basic science departments across the university and hold joint appointments in various institutes including the Comprehensive Cancer Center, Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, and the Institute for Behavioral Medicine.
