The doctoral program in oral biology brings together an interdisciplinary team of twenty-nine faculty members from three health sciences colleges (dentistry, medicine, and veterinary medicine) and the Comprehensive Cancer Center. This program primarily emphasizes hands-on laboratory training in research methodologies. Participants acquire skills in hypothesis formulation, designing coherent research plans, gathering and interpreting scientific data, and presenting research outcomes. The curriculum prepares students to grasp both contemporary and foundational scientific concepts relevant to dental and craniofacial studies. Additionally, trainees learn to identify and investigate important scientific questions through cutting-edge research techniques. Several faculty members focus on fundamental molecular and cellular processes or employ these methods to explore various biological challenges. Current research areas include: genetic factors in craniofacial disorders, pathogenesis of oral infections, extracellular matrix and hard tissue formation, hormonal control mechanisms, cellular signaling pathways, and the biology of cancer cells.
