The Department of History of Art provides Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy programs, with the MA serving as a step toward earning the PhD. Students cannot enroll solely for the master's degree. The PhD curriculum spans six years: initial coursework and MA writing requirements (thesis or qualifying papers) occupy the first two years. Subsequent years focus on advanced coursework, candidacy exams, and dissertation planning, followed by dedicated research and writing time. Beyond departmental specializations, students can explore interdisciplinary opportunities through university centers like the Center for the Study of Religion, the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, and Film Studies.
