Economics explores the reasons behind business startups, factors contributing to high joblessness, and what influences interest rate levels. However, its scope extends much further. Beyond examining wealth disparity and currency valuations, economists analyze shadow economies, personal choices like marriage and family planning, and even athletic industry dynamics. At its core, economics examines decision-making processes among individuals, corporations, and governing bodies, along with how markets coordinate these choices across diverse sectors. Experts in this field create frameworks to understand interactions between economic players - citizens, enterprises, and policymakers. They collect information to measure connections between different economic elements. Using these insights, economists forecast reactions to policy shifts and external pressures, providing valuable guidance for both private sector leaders and public officials when shaping strategies.
The Economics Department provides undergraduate programs culminating in either a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS). The BA track emphasizes qualitative approaches and interdisciplinary studies, while the BS focuses on quantitative methods suitable for advanced economics study or analytical roles in government and industry. Both degrees establish strong foundations for postgraduate studies across social sciences or professional fields like legal studies or business management.
