Earth sciences explore the complete physical composition of our planet and the timeline of physical and biological phenomena that have shaped it over 4.5 billion years. Researchers in this field investigate Earth's entire existence—from its distant origins to its current state and future evolution—employing methodologies from chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and other scientific disciplines. At Ohio State, undergraduates can select among four B.S. degree concentrations: The geological sciences track emphasizes core geology subjects like mineralogy, petrology, sedimentation, stratigraphy, paleontology, and geochemistry. This path equips graduates for diverse industry roles or advanced geological studies. The Earth system science concentration examines interdisciplinary connections beyond conventional geology, incorporating hydrogeology, glaciology, oceanography, and geomorphology while integrating insights from geography, atmospheric sciences, biology, economics, natural resources, and engineering. The geophysics specialization develops quantitative skills in geophysics and geodynamics, preparing students for top-tier graduate programs or energy sector careers. The petroleum geology and geophysics option merges elements from both geological sciences and geophysics, designed for those pursuing advanced studies in petroleum fields, internships with major oil firms, or direct employment with small-to-midsize petroleum companies.
Applicant must have successful completion of university preparatory courses, high school performance (class rank or GPA), including participation in accelerated programs like Honors, AP and IB; Ohio State does not have minimum requirements for class rank or GPA, Ability and desire to contribute to and engage with a diverse campus community, Experiences that demonstrate leadership or engaged involvement, Status as a first-generation university student, Demonstration of outstanding talent in a particular area and High school performance if adversely affected by physical, mental or learning environment factors. English proficiency level TOEFL: 79 or higher on the internet-based test, 550 or higher on the paper-based test and IELTS: 6.5 or higher
