Architecture represents a way of perceiving and engaging with our surroundings. This discipline bridges the arts, humanities, and sciences, demanding a comprehensive understanding of our environment while emphasizing both creative processes and final outcomes. At Ohio State's architecture program, undergraduates explore conceptual connections and assess how ideas influence various contexts—cultural, social, political, economic, and environmental—through research and analysis. The studio-focused approach encourages students to work independently and in teams, developing design concepts and presenting them through diverse mediums like digital visualization, physical models, full-scale constructions, written work, and public showcases. Students also delve into the technical dimensions of design by experimenting with materials, structural systems, and construction methods. The program starts with foundational courses, including a practical design studio that helps students build their portfolios. Over the next three years, six progressively challenging studios expand in scope and intricacy across different building typologies. These small, faculty-led studios of 12-15 students often include guidance from professional architects. Summer opportunities include international study programs or hands-on internships.
