Economics examines the reasons behind business startups, factors contributing to high joblessness, and what influences interest rates. Yet its scope extends much further. Beyond analyzing wealth disparity and currency values, economists explore shadow economies, personal choices like marriage and family planning, and even athletic finances. At its core, economics investigates decision-making processes of individuals, firms, and governments, and how markets coordinate these choices across diverse sectors. Experts create models to understand interactions between economic players - consumers, corporations, and policymakers. Through data collection, they measure connections between different economic elements. These insights enable forecasts about behavioral responses to policy shifts and external pressures, which subsequently inform both private and public sector strategies.

The Economics Department provides undergraduate programs culminating in either a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS). The BA track emphasizes breadth over mathematical rigor, facilitating interdisciplinary studies. The BS program focuses more intensely on quantitative methods, equipping students for advanced economics study or analytical roles in government and industry. Both degrees serve as strong foundations for graduate studies across social sciences or professional fields like law and business administration.
