Computer and information science (CIS) centers on creating software solutions to enhance efficiency, well-being, and security in modern life. The curriculum covers essential areas like algorithms, programming languages, hardware design, visual computing, system software, development methodologies, data management, machine intelligence, cybersecurity, and connectivity. Computing specialists examine real-world scenarios across various fields—including healthcare, commerce, technology, legal systems, research, and social sciences—to identify challenges and develop, assess, deploy, and refine digital solutions. Students can earn either a Bachelor of Science, which emphasizes technical depth and scientific rigor, or a Bachelor of Arts through the Computer Science and Engineering Department, with both degrees providing pathways into the computing field.
Applicant must have successful completion of university preparatory courses, high school performance (class rank or GPA), including participation in accelerated programs like Honors, AP and IB; Ohio State does not have minimum requirements for class rank or GPA, Ability and desire to contribute to and engage with a diverse campus community, Experiences that demonstrate leadership or engaged involvement, Status as a first-generation university student, Demonstration of outstanding talent in a particular area and High school performance if adversely affected by physical, mental or learning environment factors. English proficiency level TOEFL: 79 or higher on the internet-based test, 550 or higher on the paper-based test and IELTS: 6.5 or higher
