Chemistry explores the makeup, arrangement, characteristics, and transformations of substances, making it fundamental to grasping various scientific fields. Every human endeavor interacts with a material universe composed of both natural and synthetic chemicals. Chemistry's impact on contemporary life spans multiple sectors, including medicine, plastics, farm chemicals, oil products, and biological technology. It also contributes to environmental remediation, enhancing food production and packaging techniques, and developing safer, more efficient vehicles. Consequently, chemistry majors encounter a wealth of career possibilities.
The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department provides both Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts programs. The BS caters to aspiring professional chemists, while the BA serves as a liberal arts foundation, ideal for students pursuing science-related careers or professional studies like medicine, high school teaching, pharmacy, or legal fields. The BA chemistry program mandates 35 credit hours beyond introductory chemistry courses, plus 10 hours each in calculus with analytic geometry and physics.
