Medical Laboratory Scientists conduct crucial diagnostic analyses that deliver vital insights for detecting diseases, assessing their severity, or confirming their absence, while also generating treatment efficacy data. These professionals handle diverse biological specimens including blood, urine, and cellular materials. Key specialization areas in this field encompass hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, serology, urinalysis, immunohematology (blood banking), and molecular diagnostics.
Students can pursue MLS specialization after finishing the CDS core curriculum, typically during their second year. The final two years involve completing professional coursework at Oakland University. A clinical internship is mandatory for national MLS certification (essential for most hospital and private lab positions). Oakland University partners with these accredited MLS clinical programs: Detroit Medical Center University Laboratories, Ascension St. John Hospital, and Beaumont Health.
