Math educators at the middle and high school levels can be instrumental in guiding students toward careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—collectively known as STEM fields. This rapidly expanding sector offers significant opportunities for students while presenting rewarding prospects for exceptional teachers.
Nova Southeastern University's Bachelor of Science in Secondary Math Education delivers a thorough curriculum of methodology courses tailored for teaching and evaluating mathematics. The program includes specialized coursework aligned with Florida Department of Education requirements for secondary math education majors. These classes cover curriculum design, teaching techniques, and evaluation methods for subjects like geometry, algebra, and calculus, along with approaches to enhance students' problem-solving abilities. The curriculum adheres to Florida Standards and incorporates preparation for statewide math assessments (grades 6-12). Additionally, the program cultivates teacher-leaders capable of promoting equity, cultural understanding, and social responsibility in diverse learning environments.
The clinical practice (internship) serves as the capstone experience—a 12-week, full-time placement in a school setting that offers practical training in lesson preparation, teaching methods, student evaluation, and parent-teacher communication. Interns are paired with schools and mentor teachers who work alongside NSU's supervisory team. Throughout the internship, responsibilities gradually increase as participants become valued members of the school faculty. With ongoing guidance from their mentor teacher, interns eventually take complete charge of classroom instruction, culminating in their development as fully qualified educators upon successful program completion.
If you’re planning to attend college for the first time after graduating from high school, you’re considered a freshman applicant at Nova Southeastern University.
