The Master of Science in Applied Mathematics provides rigorous graduate-level coursework that equips students for professional mathematics roles in industrial settings where PhD-level expertise isn't necessary.

This program caters to students seeking fundamental applied mathematics training. Core curriculum delivers essential post-undergraduate material to enhance skills and establish a strong base for applied math careers. Students generally enroll in four courses per term to fulfill the twelve-course requirement within three quarters.

Foundational courses emphasize both analytical approaches and computational techniques in applied mathematics. Our computational course sequence prepares graduates for industry roles demanding expertise in partial differential equations, stochastic differential equations, and contemporary parallel computing methods.

The curriculum highlights methodologies including asymptotic analysis, bifurcation theory, dynamical systems, numerical analysis, differential equations (both ordinary and partial), singular perturbations, stability theory, and stochastic processes. These tools are applied to solve challenges across diverse fields such as fluid dynamics, biological sciences, earth sciences, materials science, optical technologies, interfacial phenomena, mechanical engineering, phase transitions, wave propagation, and social sciences.

Qualification Requirements

Successful applicants typically have good grades in relevant mathematics courses, good GRE quantitative scores, and strong letters of recommendation.

Relevant courses that we look for are:

Advanced calculus
Real analysis
Differential equations
Linear algebra
Complex analysis
Numerical methods or their equivalent

The only minimum we set is for the TOEFL on which an international applicant must score 550 or higher on the paper-based test, 213 or higher on the computer-based test, and 90 or higher on the Internet-based test. On the IELTS, an applicant must score 7.0 or higher. There is no minimum requirement for GRE scores.
