The LSU Mathematics Department provides multiple Master of Science degree options, as outlined below. Any adjustments to the requirements need authorization from the Director of Graduate Studies in coordination with the Mathematics Graduate Studies Committee.

This curriculum emphasizes broad mathematical knowledge and includes a mandatory thesis component. The thesis-based MS in Mathematics has the following prerequisites:

Successful completion of a minimum of 36 graduate-level credit hours, with at least 24 credits in mathematics courses, including 18 credits at the 7000-level or above.
Satisfactory completion of three Core Courses: Algebra I (Math 7210), Real Analysis (Math 7311), Topology I (Math 7510), and Applied Mathematics (Math 7382). These must be part of the mathematics course requirements and maintained with a B average or higher.
Completion of 6 thesis research credits (Math 8000).
By their second semester, students must assemble an Advisory Committee comprising at least three graduate faculty members from the mathematics department, including a Thesis Advisor who chairs the committee. The committee members should represent at least two of these specialties: algebra, analysis, applied mathematics or combinatorics, and topology. Following the Advisor's recommendation and committee approval, students will choose a thesis topic that must demonstrate either original research, valuable expository work, or significant mathematical application.
Successful completion of the MS Final Exam, involving an oral thesis defense.
