Northwestern University boasts one of the nation's most exceptional string faculties. These distinguished educators are celebrated not just for their performance skills and academic expertise, but also for their passion in nurturing young musicians through the creative journey from promising talent to professional artistry. The faculty emphasizes personal growth, helping each student develop their distinctive musical voice and creative potential.
Beyond regular private lessons, students enhance their performance skills through weekly studio classes with faculty and fellow musicians. The string program offers diverse professional coursework, encompassing orchestral studies for strings, historical and literary studies of lute and guitar, teaching methodologies for guitar and harp, and specialized harp performance training. Alongside traditional music degrees (BM, MM, DMA), the Bienen School of Music provides options for combined degree programs with other Northwestern schools.
Admitted students must hold a U.S. bachelor’s degree or a comparable non-U.S. degree from a regionally accredited institution.
TOEFL or IELTS test scores are required of most international applicants.
