Northwestern University's Ph.D. program in Slavic Languages and Literatures stands as one of the nation's top programs. It offers demanding academic preparation while providing personalized guidance and the flexibility to incorporate interdisciplinary coursework. While all students focus on Russian literature, our faculty also brings expertise in Polish, Czech, and South Slavic literary traditions.
The program excels particularly in Russian prose, poetry, literary theory, and the historical contexts of literature, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches to both teaching and scholarship. Students receive outstanding instruction in language teaching methods and essential linguistic studies. Our core faculty includes six tenured professors and two full-time lecturers, complemented by university colleagues specializing in Russian/Eastern European history, art history, Jewish studies, performing arts, and political science.
We prioritize designing customized academic paths that leverage each student's unique strengths. This includes independent study options where students can expand previous coursework or develop new research projects into conference presentations or publishable articles. These opportunities cultivate crucial skills in innovative thinking, scholarly research, and professional growth. Students are also urged to utilize Northwestern's exceptional resources in related disciplines like film studies, theater arts, philosophy, comparative literature, history, and English literature.
