The Department of English and Comparative Literature has been a pivotal force in shaping literary studies across the United States and internationally since its founding. Boasting an extensive faculty of distinguished scholars and committed educators, the department provides diverse course offerings spanning both established and evolving areas of literary and cultural research. Applications remain open for the terminal MA program. Prospective students should note that this standalone program does not lead to further graduate study within Columbia's English and Comparative Literature department. During their MA year, candidates complete eight courses, including the mandatory Master's Seminar. Additional requirements include submitting a Master's Essay and proving competency in one foreign language. Previous graduate coursework from other institutions cannot be applied toward the MA degree. First-year sequential students undergo evaluation to determine their eligibility for advancement to MPhil studies. To earn the MPhil, these students must complete six additional courses, meet a second language requirement, and pass an oral exam before commencing their PhD dissertation research. The program expects PhD candidates to complete their degrees within six years of starting the MA program.
Applicant must have the equivalent of the U.S. baccalaureate degree with a superior examination record and can understand rapid idiomatic English and can speak, write and read English with a high degree of facility are eligible for admission.
English Language Requirement
Applicant must have TOEFL score of 600 on paper-and-pencil test, 100 on the internet-based test and IELTS score of 7.5
