The Doctor of Musical Arts program at the Bienen School of Music cultivates both artistic excellence and academic accomplishment. This demanding two-year residency involves continuous study of the student's primary instrument or composition, alongside a challenging curriculum that builds expertise in related academic disciplines. To prepare for professional careers, doctoral candidates usually gain teaching experience through organized programs or customized internships. A minimum of 18 academic units must be completed.
Pedagogy courses combine theoretical learning with hands-on practice. Instructors work with students across various age groups and skill levels. Continuous professional development is supported through faculty evaluations and audio/video recordings. The school's Music Academy, which serves both youth and adult learners, provides on-campus teaching opportunities in both private and group instruction formats.
Admitted students must hold a U.S. bachelor’s degree or a comparable non-U.S. degree from a regionally accredited institution.
TOEFL or IELTS test scores are required of most international applicants.
