Beyond private instruction, brass students participate in specialized studio classes, orchestral excerpt sessions, and chamber music ensembles. They benefit from the unique resources available at a leading research university and Chicago's vibrant cultural landscape. Numerous students establish successful freelance careers while still enrolled.
The Bienen School boasts an exceptional brass faculty featuring present and past musicians from top orchestras including the Chicago, Philadelphia, Minnesota, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Dallas, and Detroit Symphony Orchestras, along with the Lyric Opera of Chicago Orchestra, Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra, and National Brass Ensemble.
Northwestern brass students and graduates consistently achieve top awards in prestigious competitions. Trumpet players have claimed first place in the International Trumpet Competition, while tuba players have triumphed in both the Leonard Falcone and Portia International Competitions. The brass sections of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago (the CSO's training orchestra) and the New World Symphony frequently include Northwestern students and alumni.
