A defining characteristic of contemporary social, behavioral, management, and policy studies is their reliance on mathematical and statistical tools, serving both as communication frameworks and analytical techniques. Northwestern's faculty employ mathematical methodologies in their social science investigations, and quantitative methods form a core element of graduate-level social science curricula. Yet, conventional undergraduate social science programs often lack structured, coherent integration of mathematical approaches. This gap leaves undergraduates in traditional tracks without methodical instruction in mathematical modeling techniques.
The MMSS curriculum provides students with essential skills for constructing and evaluating mathematical models. Alumni of this program demonstrate exceptional achievement in advanced academic pursuits and professional careers, owing to their thorough grounding in mathematical problem-solving approaches.

Northwestern accepts results from both the TOEFL and the IELTS.
There is no minimum score required by Northwestern. Competitive applicants demonstrate a high level of English proficiency and often score in the high range on all four sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing) of the TOEFL iBT, or receive IELTS band scores in highest three bands on the overall and individual scores (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking).
