Comparative Literary Studies explores global literatures and cultures through an interdisciplinary lens. Majors and minors examine literature and arts by reading widely and conducting research that crosses linguistic, national, and historical boundaries. With insights gained from comparing multiple language traditions, students also explore cultural expressions beyond literature, including media, music, and visual arts. The program emphasizes a global literary outlook: alongside Classical, European, and Anglo-American works, students engage with Latin American, Asian, African, and Middle Eastern literatures. Students develop expertise in literary theory and critical analysis, equipping them to interpret texts from diverse regions and historical periods.

The CLS Major offers students a comprehensive view of literature that transcends any single national tradition. By studying works from at least two cultural traditions (typically starting with their native language and adding a foreign language literature), students recognize cultural distinctions and examine their underlying reasons. The program encourages exploration beyond Euro-American traditions to include literary works from across the globe.
