This program equips students to become Texas State certified Community Health Workers (CHWs), preparing them for roles in public health agencies, nonprofit organizations, healthcare facilities, and family service providers. The curriculum focuses on health education, community advocacy, nutritional guidance, and building connections with underserved populations. Students will gain skills for CHW certification while creating a foundation for an Associate of Applied Science in Community Health. The training emphasizes fostering supportive relationships to help individuals adopt healthier lifestyles, access medical/social resources, and manage chronic conditions through education.
Graduates will learn to advance community wellness by guiding individuals and families toward healthier choices. They'll act as health advocates, bridging communication between residents and healthcare/social service providers while implementing initiatives that enhance both individual and public health. The program teaches students to distribute educational materials, conduct preventive health screenings (such as blood pressure and vision tests), and gather community health data for research and needs assessment.
