Our English graduate program stands out in the region by offering literature, writing, and creative writing courses designed as flexible umbrella classes. These courses feature rotating content with each offering, providing students with the diverse, in-depth experience essential for quality Master's programs in English. The Department of Language, Literature, and Writing boasts twelve expert faculty members—eleven holding doctorates and one with an M.F.A.—who specialize in literature, language theory, pedagogy, and creative writing. With intimate class sizes (typically 5-15 students), our engaging, approachable professors foster a welcoming academic atmosphere. Students enjoy a collaborative environment where strong professional bonds form. The department provides five graduate assistantships, with additional opportunities available across campus.

Qualification Requirements

Students must be currently pursuing a B.A. or B.S. with a major in English or Writing at Northwest or transferring into one of these programs from another accredited institution within the United States.
Students must apply for admission to the program no sooner than the end of the sophomore year (at least 60 hours of graded courses) and no later than the beginning of the final trimester of their undergraduate program. (N.B.: Students who begin the program in their final undergraduate trimester will need to complete summer coursework in order to finish the M.A. by the end of the fifth year.)
Students must submit their transcripts, a writing sample, and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member in a relevant discipline to the Graduate School.
Students must also have an overall GPA >= 3.0 AND a major GPA >= 3.3. Students with a slightly lower GPA may be considered for conditional admittance to the program with a strong writing sample and recommendation letter.
Minimum score requirements are:

79-80 Internet based
IELTS: 6.5 overall band score
