Northwest emphasizes experiential education, with our biology program designed for practical learning right from the start. The Garrett-Strong Science Building serves as your primary workspace, featuring 26 specialized laboratories along with unique resources like a synthetic cadaver, aquarium, two museums, and resident animals including hedgehogs, rats, iguanas, and various other species.
This major covers essential biological disciplines including plant science, animal biology, human physiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, evolutionary studies, biodiversity, genetics, and environmental science. Our accomplished faculty bring extensive field expertise, guiding you through curriculum implementation, fostering effective learning spaces, mastering student communication, and evaluating academic development.
Lesson planning often proves challenging for new educators, but we provide comprehensive support. Our content practicum course spans a full semester, during which you'll develop instructional labs and lead two laboratory sessions. This experience builds confidence in classroom leadership. Upon completion, you'll be fully prepared to teach all high school biology subjects (grades 9 through 12).
