The thesis track is designed mainly for students seeking to specialize in specific biology fields or those planning to pursue advanced graduate studies. Participants must register for BIOS 699, Master's Thesis, and complete a written thesis. Between 12 and 18 semester hours of combined credit from BIOS 699 and BIOS 770 can count toward the degree. A graduate committee chaired by the student's research advisor will conduct a final oral comprehensive exam, which includes thesis defense.
For the non-thesis degree, students must show teaching competence in Human Anatomical Sciences by either (a) earning at least 4 credit hours in BIOS 626 - Teaching Methods for Human Anatomy, or (b) presenting an approved teaching portfolio to their committee. This portfolio should document coursework and grades, teaching or assistant roles as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, a personal teaching philosophy statement, and additional materials proving teaching skills. The advisory committee must review and approve the portfolio by the final comprehensive examination date.
