The Graduate Group in Nutritional Biology awards a Master of Science (M.S.) degree. M.S. candidates must complete a thesis under Plan I, as the comprehensive examination option (Plan II) requires special approval from the Executive Committee. Plan I entails 30 units of upper-division and graduate courses plus a thesis, while Plan II demands 36 units of coursework and a comprehensive exam. The program provides in-depth understanding of diverse nutritional science areas including biochemistry, clinical nutrition, metabolic processes, public health nutrition, and specialized topics like gene-nutrient interactions and dietary behavior. Graduates develop both qualitative and quantitative expertise for research and academic careers in nutritional biology.
Consideration for program admission requires a bachelor’s degree. A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is required.
