This program culminates in a Ph.D. in psychology, with cognitive psychology studies focusing on both theoretical foundations and practical applications. It prepares graduates for teaching and research careers across academic and professional environments.
The Master of Arts in psychology is an intensive, full-time pathway to the Ph.D. Students expand their understanding of fundamental and applied psychological principles while honing research capabilities for careers as practitioners or researchers. The M.A. program mandates at least 30 semester hours in psychology, with a maximum of 15 combined transfer credits and NIU student-at-large credits applicable toward the degree.

Qualification Requirements
An applicant whose native language is not English must present an IELTS score of 6.5 or alternatively, a TOEFL score of at least 80 on the TOELF ibt. Normally, to be considered for admission, a non-U.S. citizen shall have completed a four-year undergraduate degree. A minimum 2.75 overall GPA on a 4.00 system or a 3.20 GPA with 15 or more semester hours of graduate work at an accredited institution.
