Students are required to select a focus area in either audiology or speech-language pathology. Following consultation with their advisor, they can opt to pursue a degree with or without completing a thesis. Enrollment in practicum and internship courses is contingent upon maintaining satisfactory academic progress and obtaining approval from the school. Upon completing 60 semester hours in the Au.D. program, students become eligible to apply for the master's program.

Qualification Requirements
An applicant for admission to the program must meet or exceed the following requirements: A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20 in Au.D. course work taken at NIU. Academic adviser recommendation. A typed statement describing the need for the master's degree. An applicant whose native language is not English must present an IELTS score of 6.5 or alternatively, a TOEFL score of at least 80 on the TOELF ibt.
The M.A. in Communicative Disorders with a specialization in audiology is available to Doctor of Audiology students in good standing who require a master's degree prior to their fourth year external placement. After a student has successfully completed 60 semester hours in the Au.D. program, he or she may apply for admission to the master's program. An applicant for admission to the program must meet or exceed the following requirements:

A minimum 2.75 overall GPA on a 4.00 system or a 3.20 GPA with 15 or more semester hours of graduate work at an accredited institution.
