Comparative politics research aims to identify the fundamental patterns shaping political processes across various countries and global regions. This exploration encompasses diverse political phenomena, including but not limited to globalization, governance structures, democratic transitions, civic engagement, and grassroots political dynamics.
The faculty profiles in the sidebar showcase our specialized teaching focuses and research expertise. Our department excels particularly in studying developing democracies, electoral behavior, activist networks, Islamic political movements, and international economic systems. Our geographic coverage spans multiple continents, with specialists in Southeast Asian, Western European, Russian, African, and East Asian political systems.
Numerous faculty and graduate students concentrate on the complexities facing new democracies. A unique aspect of our program is the strong Southeast Asian specialization among several comparative politics faculty. This regional focus builds upon a nearly fifty-year academic tradition and benefits from NIU's interdisciplinary Center for Southeast Asian Studies.
