The PhD program in biological sciences equips students with advanced capabilities to plan and execute independent research for careers in both public and private organizations. Our distinctive curriculum cultivates research methodologies, technical competencies, and analytical reasoning while deepening students' scientific knowledge and comprehension of research principles. Applicants to the biological sciences doctoral program must satisfy all Graduate School admission criteria, hold an undergraduate or graduate degree in biological sciences or a related discipline, and complete coursework comparable to NIU's bachelor's requirements - covering biological diversity, foundational biology (two semesters), genetics, organic chemistry (one year), physics (one year), and introductory calculus.
