Students who maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and a 3.20 GPA in all departmental and non-departmental requirements will receive the B.S. degree with honors in chemistry. This requires completing 13 semester hours of honors chemistry courses (CHEM 325 and above, excluding CHEM 370), including CHEM 499 (2-4 credits) and presenting a capstone thesis. Chemistry plays a role in nearly every aspect of our lives, enhancing health, daily living, and environmental quality. Northern Illinois University is recognized as one of the leading institutions for producing ACS-certified bachelor's degree recipients. The majority of chemistry professionals pursue research careers, with approximately two-thirds of our alumni employed in corporate settings. Degree holders may secure positions with cosmetic firms, medical labs, energy companies, utilities, pharmaceutical corporations, chemical producers, or environmental consulting agencies. Career paths also include opportunities in government, education, nonprofit organizations, research institutions, or advanced studies in pharmacy, medicine, or graduate programs.
