In the 21st century, there's no denying that humanity faces escalating environmental impacts as we provide sustenance, energy, resources, and essential services to over 7.5 billion people worldwide. The Environmental Systems Program (ESYS) addresses the increasing need for environmental experts by equipping undergraduates for diverse career paths and advanced studies across natural sciences, social sciences, public policy, law, and business. This cross-disciplinary approach acknowledges that environmental challenges—whether local, national, or global—transcend conventional academic divisions. A key obstacle in solving complex environmental issues is the shortage of professionals skilled in interdisciplinary analytical approaches. Many environmental practitioners lack comprehensive training in natural sciences, including core concepts and methods of earth and environmental sciences. The environmental systems major was specifically developed to overcome these critical gaps.
