NAU collaborates with prestigious institutions including Lowell Observatory, the US Geological Survey's Astrogeology Science Center, the US Naval Observatory, the Naval Research Laboratory, the Discovery Channel Telescope, and the Naval Precision Optical Interferometer. Our curriculum covers specialized areas in astronomy and planetary sciences, including big data analysis and remote sensing applications. The Astronomy and Planetary Science PhD program equips graduates for research careers in academia, government agencies, or private industry. Students complete an eight-course foundational program while developing original research supervised by faculty advisors, culminating in a dissertation defense and oral presentation of their findings.

Qualification Requirements

The NAU graduate online application is required for all programs. Admission to many graduate programs is on a competitive basis, and programs may have higher standards than those established by the Graduate College.

Admission requirements include the following:

Transcripts.
Undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution with a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (A = 4.0), or the equivalent.

Individual program admission requirements over and above admission to NAU are required.

A statement of interest describing why you are applying to NAU as well as your professional interests and goals
A scientific/technical writing sample such as a senior thesis, MS thesis, major course paper or professional report demonstrating your analytical and writing skills
Three letters of recommendation from people who know you well
A current Curriculum Vitae

Admitted students are expected to have undergraduate educational experiences, including general education studies, that are similar to those required for a baccalaureate at Northern Arizona University.
Applicants who have earned their degree(s) from an international institution must submit official transcripts directly from the university or college. The transcripts must be in the original language of the country accompanied by an English translation. If the degree awarded and the date of award is not on the transcripts, applicants must also include a separate degree certificate document.
