The Hotel and Restaurant Major provides a robust liberal arts education alongside specialized hospitality classes and hands-on training. Participants must study a modern language for two semesters to enhance cultural understanding and improve effectiveness in multilingual workplaces. A mandatory supervised internship requires 1200 hours in hospitality settings, allowing students to gain practical experience, strengthen their professional profiles, and implement classroom knowledge. Additionally, study abroad options broaden global perspectives, while involvement in any of the eight student organizations, such as the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality, fosters career growth and networking prospects.
This program equips graduates with essential management principles and operational skills for diverse hospitality sectors. The curriculum includes industry-focused subjects like hospitality fundamentals, hotel and restaurant administration, kitchen operations basics, hospitality IT, sustainable facility management, organizational behavior, HR practices, managerial accounting, industry analytics, marketing strategies, and leadership ethics. Fifteen credit hours of hospitality electives are required, with 35 options available to develop specialized expertise. While optional, students can pursue one of seven hospitality certificates to concentrate their electives in areas like event management or hospitality finance.
