The Physics Department provides a Doctor of Philosophy program in Physics with concentrations spanning various cutting-edge research areas within the department, such as biological physics, condensed matter physics, particle physics, nanomedicine, nanophysics, and network science. To earn the PhD, students must complete mandatory coursework, pass a qualifying exam, deliver a preliminary research presentation, produce an original dissertation, and defend their research findings. These requirements ensure students develop advanced comprehension of fundamental physics principles while cultivating skills in research planning, oral communication, and independent investigation.
PhD candidates will conduct novel research within the department's ongoing theoretical or experimental projects, guided by a Physics Department advisor. Students may also pursue interdisciplinary studies under a faculty member from another university department or engage in applied research through the department's industrial PhD program, working with supervisors at partner high-tech laboratories.
The Physics Department guarantees comprehensive financial support through teaching assistantships, which include an annual stipend along with full tuition coverage and health benefits.
