The Marine and Environmental Sciences PhD program prepares scholars to conduct autonomous research tackling both theoretical and practical challenges across local, regional, national, and international contexts.
Northeastern's doctoral program in Marine and Environmental Sciences develops exceptional, self-directed researchers who investigate critical questions in marine and environmental studies at various scales. Our scholars apply their work to solve pressing societal and ecological challenges. Beyond cultivating research excellence, we equip students with skills to effectively disseminate their discoveries. Through teaching opportunities and community engagement initiatives both locally and globally, students refine these vital competencies. To tailor their education to professional aspirations, candidates choose from four specializations: Marine Sciences, Geosciences, Sustainability Sciences, and Ecology & Evolutionary Biology. Though research focuses may be specific, the learning environment benefits from faculty expertise spanning coastal resilience, earth sciences, marine life studies, chemical cycles, climate change biology, ocean robotics, fisheries management, reef ecosystems, and human-environment interactions.
