This combined major equips undergraduates to comprehend the scientific, cultural, and political dimensions of global environmental challenges while examining their philosophical, moral, and ethical consequences on human-environment relationships. Because of curriculum overlaps, Environmental Studies majors or students in any Environmental Studies combined programs cannot pursue a minor in Environmental and Sustainability Sciences. The Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences offers students comprehensive, interdisciplinary insights into Earth's diverse ecosystems through studying chemical, physical, geological, socio-ecological, and biological processes. This foundational knowledge, combined with a focus on pressing planetary challenges, aims to generate sustainable solutions. Northeastern graduates emerge ready to tackle critical issues like fishery collapses, climate change effects (including rising sea levels), coastal degradation, and contamination. Solving modern environmental complexities requires professionals to collaborate across disciplines with natural and social scientists, engineers, and policy experts. Therefore, our undergraduate curriculum prioritizes hands-on learning experiences alongside conventional academic instruction.
