The Department of Plant Sciences provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Science (M.S.) degrees for Cereal Science, Plant Sciences, and Horticulture, along with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Cereal Science or Plant Sciences, featuring an optional concentration in Plant Breeding and Genetics. Students can pursue focused academic and research training in Plant Sciences across disciplines like plant breeding and genetics, weed science, biotechnology, and field and forage crop production. Horticulture specializations cover breeding and genetics, biotechnology, physiology, propagation, sports and urban turf grass management, as well as production techniques for horticultural crops including woody plants, potatoes, vegetables, and ornamental plants. Cereal Science specializations may explore research topics such as carbohydrates, enzymes, legumes and other northern crops, barley malting and brewing, along with wheat milling, baking, and pasta production. Each program equips students with a thorough understanding of their field while addressing pertinent regional and global societal challenges.
