The Microbiology master's program focuses on developing research methods and lab skills. Each student's coursework and research projects are customized to build a solid microbiology knowledge base while aligning with their personal interests. This prepares graduates for careers in research labs, industry settings, or advanced academic pursuits. Students choose their primary advisor during the initial semester and form a supervisory committee by the end of their first year. The program offers two paths to earn an M.S.: completing a thesis with faculty guidance or submitting an in-depth research paper.
Upon graduation, master's students will demonstrate these competencies:
Uphold ethical and professional practices in Microbiology, including project management, public engagement, and workplace preparedness.
Establish fundamental knowledge in Microbiology and/or Immunology, with hands-on expertise in various methodologies.
Evaluate scientific information critically and produce polished technical writing. Make meaningful contributions (including co-authorship) to peer-reviewed publications.
The degree requires 30 semester credits minimum with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Students must complete 8-9 credits from designated core courses as part of their program requirements.
