The Department of Sociology and Anthropology provides both Master of Science (M.S.) and Master of Arts (M.A.) degrees in Anthropology. This program focuses on humanity's cultural and material legacy across time - past, present, and future - while emphasizing that graduate-level anthropological training prepares students for diverse career paths. Each student develops an individualized study plan with guidance from their academic advisor. Beyond coursework, graduate students are encouraged to participate in professional activities like presenting research at conferences, campus/community service, and teaching/research assistantships. Our alumni have secured positions in various fields including higher education, archaeological consulting, folklore program direction, international studies administration, National Park Service archaeology, nonprofit event coordination, overseas English instruction, and cultural research analysis.
Anthropology graduate studies prepare students for both applied anthropology careers and doctoral programs. Learners can choose specialized coursework in cultural anthropology or archaeology, or opt for a broader anthropological foundation.
The graduate program enhances students' theoretical knowledge and research methodologies, with the first year dedicated to anthropological theory and diverse research approaches. Students have access to specialized facilities including the Archaeology Technologies Laboratory and Anthropology Materials Laboratory.
