The School of Natural Resource Sciences provides a four-year Bachelor of Science program in soil science, an earth science discipline that integrates the examination of atmospheric conditions, surface and groundwater systems, geological formations, and living ecosystems. This field of study applies principles from biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics to practical environmental challenges. Students tailor their academic path based on individual strengths, aspirations, and professional objectives. Graduates develop expertise in agricultural systems, ecological preservation, and resource management challenges. The Soil Science Department conducts both fundamental and practical investigations, with faculty members recognized globally for their work in environmental geosciences, land restoration, and plant nutrition. These studies enhance knowledge about contaminant transport through earth materials, rehabilitation of degraded landscapes, and cultivation of various crops from legumes to root vegetables. Numerous students pursuing natural resource degrees or other academic programs across the university complement their studies with a soil science minor. This minor qualification enables graduates to obtain professional certification as soil scientists with federal agencies like the USDA.
