The Department of Mathematics provides a comprehensive and diverse range of courses delivered by 19 faculty members. Students can pursue majors in either mathematics or mathematics education, with options to add minors in related disciplines. These academic decisions can be made upfront or postponed until foundational coursework is finished. Beyond the Bachelor of Science degree, the department also grants master's and doctoral degrees. Recent years have seen a significant surge in demand for mathematical expertise across various sectors including actuarial science, computer science, statistics, engineering, economics, and business. Those with a passion and aptitude for mathematics will discover both intellectual challenges and professional prospects within NDSU's Mathematics Department. Faculty advisors guide students through course selection, degree planning, and career pathways in mathematics. The Cooperative Education Program enables students to earn academic credit through practical work experience. Through the Math Club, students engage with guest speakers who discuss career paths and intriguing mathematical concepts. Additional learning opportunities include paper grading and tutoring roles, which reinforce understanding by helping peers. Actuarial Science focuses on risk assessment and management. This pre-professional track equips students with the necessary foundation to enter the field through a series of professional certification exams. The interdisciplinary curriculum combines mathematics, statistics, finance, law, and business principles, leading to a dual major in Mathematics and Statistics with an Economics minor or supplementary business courses. Students are encouraged to consult regularly with actuarial advisors in both Mathematics and Statistics departments to track progress and stay updated on exam requirements.
