The History Education program offers courses spanning multiple historical disciplines, including European, American, and global studies (Widening Horizons). Those pursuing this major train to deliver comprehensive historical instruction to varied student groups. Historical knowledge forms the foundation for comprehending our modern world—a truth occasionally neglected in today's present-focused American culture. To grasp current realities and navigate future challenges effectively, one must develop a firm grounding in historical context. Our contemporary circumstances stem directly from past events, and today's significant issues demand the analytical framework that historical perspective provides.
All degree tracks mandate coursework in English, social sciences, and STEM disciplines. Program-specific requirements include: a complementary minor for Bachelor of Science candidates, intermediate foreign language proficiency for Bachelor of Arts students, and 30 credit hours in designated education courses for history education majors. These degree paths incorporate diverse studies in American, European, and international history. Following introductory classes, history majors collaborate with advisors to design cohesive upper-level course sequences. All programs require 39 history credits, distributed across foundational (9-15 credits at 100-200 level), research methodology, and advanced coursework (minimum 18 credits at 300-400 level, with geographical distribution requirements). The curriculum culminates in a mandatory three-credit senior seminar for all history majors.
