The Crop and Weed Sciences (CWS) program within the Department of Plant Sciences focuses on grain and forage cultivation, weed management, plant genetics, breeding techniques, crop physiology, and biotechnological applications. North Dakota maintains its position as the top U.S. producer of hard red spring wheat, durum wheat, barley, flax, dry edible beans, canola, dry peas, lentils, and sunflowers. Additionally, the state ranks among the top ten producers for various other field crops such as oats, rye, sugar beets, and grass hay, typically holding third place for total harvested crop acreage. Crop sales generate over 50% of North Dakota farmers' annual revenue, while crops used as livestock feed contribute significantly to income from animal sales. This agricultural prominence makes North Dakota State University an ideal environment for pursuing studies in crop and weed sciences.
