This program features an interdisciplinary optics and photonics curriculum offered jointly by the Physics Department and Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, utilizing cutting-edge laboratory facilities. As the sole regional program of its kind, it focuses on optics and lasers as foundational technologies with applications across high-tech research, communications, medical equipment, digital media, and more. With over 5,000 U.S. companies specializing in optics and countless others relying on photonics technology, the field faces a growing demand for skilled professionals. This optical science and engineering specialization significantly boosts career prospects in this expanding field.
The Physics Department maintains thriving undergraduate and graduate programs while preserving an intimate learning environment with just 11 faculty members, ensuring personalized attention. Students frequently engage in research early, contributing to published papers and presenting at regional and national conferences. They also excel in competitions like the University Physics Competition and participate in community outreach. The department concentrates its research efforts in three key areas: materials science (particularly soft materials), computational physics, and physics education research. This focused approach enables national and international recognition. Multiple degree paths prepare students for diverse careers in industry, government, and academia. The Fargo/Moorhead area's three colleges with physics programs collaborate through Tri-College University, expanding course offerings to rival those of larger institutions.
